Whether you’re watching the Kentucky Derby, or just celebrating the weekend, here’s a fast fun drink recipe for you. This is great on it’s own (no alcohol). But, if you want to make it a true Julep, add some good Kentucky Bourbon. Either way, it is meant to be sipped slowly as the ice melts. What better way to slow down and contemplate the weekend?
For one Green Tea Chocolate Mint Julep:
Brew a cup of green tea and let cool slightly.
Place 2-3 chocolate mint leaves in the bottom of a glass. Add 2 teaspoons Turbinado sugar (I like it’s earthy flavor for this, but you can substitute regular sugar, honey or agave nectar). Muddle the sugar and leaves with the back of an iced tea spoon to crush the mint.
Pour one tablespoon of green tea on top and stir to dissolve the sugar. Place one cup of crushed ice in the glass and fill with remaining green tea.
Stir, stick a straw in it and enjoy!
I purchased a chocolate mint plant last month after being tempted by it’s scent. When the weather is breezy, I could sit outside all day taking it in. You can use regular mint as it is not readily available in stores, but I highly recommend getting your own chocolate mint plant!
